New Administrative Assignments (effective July 1)
Central Office–
- Tony Watlington becomes the new executive director of school support. He is the former principal at The Middle College at GTCC – Jamestown, Dudley High and Fairview Elementary.
Principals –
- Trent Vernon becomes the new principal at Johnson Street. He is the former assistant principal at Mendenhall Middle.
- William Laine becomes the new principal at Kernodle Middle. He is the former principal at Harmon Middle in Aurora City Schools.
- Sharon Jacobs becomes the new principal at Washington Elementary. She is the former assistant principal at Hairston Middle.
Assistant Principals-
- Karen Ellis becomes new assistant principal at Northern Middle. She is a former middle school math teacher at Hairston Middle and academic coach.
- Arthur Fleming becomes new assistant principal at Smith High. He is the former technology education teacher at Southern Middle and has been the positive behavior support facilitator at Hairston Middle.
- Pamela Ford-Brown and Rydell Harrison become the new assistant principals at Jackson Middle. Pamela is the former curriculum facilitator at Jackson Middle and a former instructional technology specialist at Northeast, Hairston and Montlieu. Rydell is the former principal intern at Jackson Middle, and has been a music teacher at Lindley and Sternberger.
- Kimberly Gilyard and Quincy Williams become the new assistant principals at Southwest Middle. Kimberly is the former administrative intern at Cone, Ragsdale and Southwest Middle and has worked as a teacher in Brooks, Foust, Alderman and Jones. Quincy is the former academic coach and a math curriculum facilitator at Hairston Middle.
- Gerald O’Donnell becomes the new assistant principal at Northeast High. He is the former curriculum facilitator at Bessemer Elementary.

Wachovia Teacher and Principal of the Year Celebration
We are proud to welcome Wachovia back as our sponsor for the GCS Teacher and Principal of the Year Awards. Wachovia is the sponsor for the North Carolina Principal of the Year event, and we are honored to have them join us again in a district–level partnership. We will announce the 2008 GCS Teacher and Principal of the Year at a reception on September 22 at UNC-Greensboro. Special thanks to TOY Interview Committee members: Valerie Akins, John Eldridge, Kim Berg, Teresa Owens and Margie Thompson. After reviewing portfolios and interviewing top scorers, the Teacher of the Year committee selected these five finalists for the 2008 award:

Sabrina Peacock – Pilot Elementary
Sophia Roberts – Jones Elementary

The deadline to submit nominations for Principal of the Year is July 9. Nomination forms are located on the GCS homepage. We plan to announce our Principal of the Year finalists the beginning of September. We are looking forward to recognizing all of these outstanding educators at the Wachovia “Best in Class Awards” on September 22. Principals Trained with New School Executives Evaluation Process
On June 25 and 26, GCS principals and instructional improvement officers participated in a two-day training on the new school executives standards and evaluation process. Sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction, this training provided school leaders and their evaluators an opportunity to examine the new process and determine steps for implementation. The new evaluation process begins statewide effective during the 2008-09 school year. For more information, please contact Peggy Thompson, chief human resources officer, at 370-8340.
Fastest Kids in Guilford County Display Speed and Fitness
GCS, along with Nike Outdoor Nationals and the National Scholastic Sports Foundation, found the fastest elementary school boy and girl, as well as the fastest middle school boy and girl at the fourth annual Fastest Kid competition at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
For the second year in a row, Gabrielle Gray from Welborn Middle was the quickest middle school girl, running the race in 12.13 seconds – a new meet record. Chris Boyd from The Academy at Lincoln was the fastest middle school boy with a time of 11.89 seconds.
In the elementary division, Ariel Davis from Jones Spanish Immersion was the quickest girl. She finished the 100-meter race in 14.32 seconds. With a time of 12.13, DeVonte Williams from Brightwood Elementary was the speediest of the boys.
The event kicked off on Thursday with a clinic open to all students. Participants received a free T-shirt. The clinic was followed by preliminaries, which saw a record number of entrants – more than 200. At the finals on Friday, the top six finishers of each division received a medal for their hard work. Central Office Summer Schedule
GCS central offices will operate on a summer schedule from Monday, June 16 through Friday, August 15. Summer office hours are:
- 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday
- 7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Friday
Normal office hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) resume on Monday, August 18. We will revert back to normal office hours during the first week of July (June 30 – July 4) due to the July 4 holiday.
Brief Break
After today, GCS News Briefs will be on hiatus until Friday, July 18.
GCSTV2
Special Board of Education Meeting
This special called meeting of the GCS Board of Education focuses on African-American male achievement. The program runs at 1 p.m. & 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and nightly Sunday through Saturday at 7 p.m. through mid July.
Summer Reading Lists
GCS encourages students to continue reading during their summer vacation to keep their skills sharp and broaden their knowledge base. GCSTV 2 periodically airs summer reading lists for the various grades throughout the day. See our hourly Program Guide for air times.
“Taking Initiative: A Look Inside Guilford County Schools”
GCSTV 2 is showing this UNC-TV documentary on the innovative approaches and educational accomplishments of GCS. The program explores how initiatives like GCS’ Mission Possible, Home Field Advantage and Newcomers School are leading the way to better opportunities for our students. This documentary is made possible thanks to the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation, the Cemala Foundation and the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation. The program can be seen daily at 9:01 a.m. and 10:01 p.m.
Rappers’ Tribute
It’s an original composition and a tribute to the late Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King. High Point Central High seniors Amos Mobley and Kenneth Ledbetter’s rap is attracting attention within the music industry. GCSTV 2 produced a music video for the song featuring these two members of their school’s Men of Valor Excelling (MOVE) chapter. This video runs Tuesday through 12:15 p.m. and 8:55 p.m. and Friday through Monday 11:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Music Showcase-All County Middle School Band
Music plays a big role in the arts education offered at GCS schools. The All-County Band Concert gives students a chance to showcase their talents and GCSTV 2 provides you a seat in the audience. This program runs daily at 9:01 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Music Showcase-All County High School Band
This performance features the best of the best of GCS’ high school band talent taped at their spring performance at Grimsley High. This program runs daily at 10:01 a.m., 6:01 p.m. and 10:01 p.m.
Eat Smart-Move More
The right nutrition is important to maintain good health. GCS offers some healthy advice on choosing the right foods and portion sizes to cut down on the extra fat and calories that may be lurking in our diets. Join Registered Dietitian Amanda Hester and Ashley Mathis for our series “Eat Smart.” Your “Guide to Healthier Eating” runs daily at 6:57 a.m. and 7:56 a.m., Tuesday through Thursday at 9:52 p.m. and Friday through Monday at 9:55 p.m.
Driver’s Edge-Driver’s Education Special
Take this in-depth driver’s education course that gives real world examples and advice on how to handle a car safely. Some of the drivers who should know best - Indy Series racers - hand out the generous advice. This program runs Friday through Monday at 5:59 a.m. and 4:59 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday at 4:59 a.m. and 5:59 p.m.
GCSTV 2 & ABC-45
GCS continues its partnership with ABC-45 television to share the following current news and feature stories about our district. The segments air on ABC-45 (Cable Channel 7) during “Good Morning America” each Wednesday and Friday at 7:25 a.m. and 8:25 a.m.
Teacher Supply Warehouse Donations Welcomed
Through the generous contributions of local businesses and individuals, the GCS Teacher Supply Warehouse supplies teachers with some of the classroom tools they have traditionally bought with their own money. See what one local company donated just by asking employees to clean up their areas, and find out how you or your business can join in to help. This Newsbreak airs Wednesday, July 2.
A Thank You for Caring
The students at Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary school corresponded with the troops in Iraq all year. They collected candy, toiletries and other supplies and sent them overseas at Christmas. The members of the 396th Medical Company say thank you with a special visit to the school. This Newsbreak airs Friday, July 6.
